Calaveras County,CA - No Date - River Crossing, Stanislaus River Photograph :
Two passengers make their way on Robinson’s Ferry. Photograph measures 6 1/4”x4 3/4”, no matte, high contrast and focus is sharp. No photographer identified. There is creasing on the lower left corner of the photo and minor wear on the other corners. The reverse of the photo has a variety of writing and scribbles in pen and ink. The general consensus on the reverse indicates that the crossing in the photo is “Robinson’s Ferry on the Stanislaus River, the second oldest ferry in Calaveras County.” Robinson’s Ferry was established to transport freight by John W. Robinson and Stephen Mead in 1848. The crossing was maintained by the Wood Family until 1911. Presently, the river crossing is under New Melones Lake, a reservoir created by the construction of the New Melones Dam in 1979 by the Army Corp of Engineers. Location not verified.
