Cabinet Card of Sans Arc Sioux Chief Spotted Eagle who fought at Little Big Horn. Offered here is an incredible sepia-tone photo of this legendary Sioux chief who fought with Sitting Bull against Custer and the 7th Cavalry at Little Big Horn. The picture is from circa 1880 and depicts the young warrior wearing a beaded shirt with bear claw arm bands, and a single feather roach; he is holding a studded war club. In 1877, Spotted Eagle moved his band of Sans Arc to Canada, returning in 1880 and surrendering to General Nelson Miles at Fort Keough in Montana. His band numbered 2500 and their village was the last great leather lodge village seen on the Yellowstone. This is where Rain-in-the Face was held as a prisoner of war and most likely where this awesome photo was taken. The 4" x 5.75" image is mounted to a gold-bordered cabinet card with the photographer's stamp (and backstamp) of John H. Ryder Studios - 211 Superior Street - Cleveland, Ohio. Condition is excellent, contrast and clarity are great, and the corners are bumped slightly, slight mounting trace at one end of verso. You would be hard-pressed to find a better example.
