This is a cabinet card entitled "Joe writes home." It shows a chimpanzee in a suit, sitting at a desk, writing on a piece of paper with a pen. The photo is copyright 1896. It is from Browning, 167 1/2 First St. between Morrison & Yamhill, Portland, Oregon. According to Mautz, this is either Flora or George, who both worked at the Browning Photo Gallery, 1896-1908. 6.5 x 4.25" From an 1897 article in The Literary Digest, "Joe" appears to be a travelling attraction in dime museums and side-shows. He writes characters and can sign his name. He can also ride a bike and even light his own cigar!
