Fort Yates was established December 23, 1874 and located on the banks of the Missouri River. It was about 10 miles from the South Dakota line and established as headquarters for the Standing Rock Sioux Indian Agency. George Yates, for whom the fort was named, was captain of the 7th US Cavalry and was killed June 25, 1876 in the Battle of Little Big Horn.
