Cabinet Card - a SP of two Mandan warriors
Cabinet Card - A studio portrait of two Mandan warriors and a woman, "Bismarck Mary"
Circa 1880
Length 6 1/2 in. Width 4 1/4 in.

The man on the left is holding a Missouri war ax and the woman has a beaded knife case wedged in her belt. The so-called "Missouri war ax" is first described in the journals of Lewis and Clark. It can be inferred from the diary entry of Merriwether Lewis for February 5, 1805 that the expedition blacksmith was forging these blades to meet Indian demand. Local Indians would bring corn into Fort Mandan to exchange for weapons and other goods during the harsh winter of 1804-05.
Photographer is unidentified. The seated woman is identified in script on the reverse as "Bismarck Mary". Very good condition and tone.

Reference
Moulton, Gary E.
