Cabinet Card - Studio Portrait of the Hunkpapa Sioux Chief Gall
Circa 1885
Length 6 1/2 in. Width 4 1/4 in.

Gall is wearing a large German silver cross and is dressed in a hide jacket, leggings, moccasins, and otter fur braid wraps.
Gall was an esteemed warrior and a fierce opponent of white aggressors prior to his settlement on the Standing Rock Reservation. A large part of his fame centers around his heroics at the Battle of the Little Bighorn on June 25, 1876. Gall admirably led and rallied his fellow warriors throughout the battle, first repulsing Reno's column and then attacking and annihilating Custer and his troops.
D.F. Barry took a number of well known portriats of Gall. In later years, Elizabeth Custer would write the photographer, "Mr. Barry, Painful as it is for me to look upon a pictured face of an Indian, I never dreamed in all my life, there could be so fine a specimen of a warrior, in all the tribes as Chief Gall. - Mrs. Elizabeth B. Custer".
Photograph by D.F. Barry with his studio imprint on the front.
