Cabinet Card - Studio portrait of the famous Hunkpapa Sioux Chief Sitting Bull
Circa 1885
Length 6 1/2 in. Width 4 1/4 in.

In this well known pose, Sitting Bull is wearing a split horn bonnet decorated with ermine skins and having an eagle feather trailer. A beaded knife case is tied to his waist and he is holding a stone head war club. This photo was taken nine years after his stunning victory over Custer's 7th Cavalry on the Little Bighorn, June 25, 1876. Pursued by the United States military, Sitting Bull led his followers into exile in Canada in 1877. He returned to the United States in 1881 with the promise that he could join his people at Standing Rock. However, he was held as a military prisoner for two years at Fort Randall. Released in May, 1883, Sitting Bull continued the struggle to protect his people, their land, and way of life. Photograph by D. F. Barry with his studio imprint on the front of the card. The reverse side is blank. Excellent tone and condition.
