Cabinet Card - Studio Portrait of Chief Last Horse holding a Horse Effigy Stick
Circa 1893
Length 6 1/2 in. Width 4 1/4 in.

He is wearing an eagle feather bonnet and an otter fur necklace decorated with trade mirrors. He is holding a wood horse effigy stick. Although quite rare, horse sticks have been noted from a number of northern Plains tribes. These dramatic objects were made to honor and commemorate a favorite steed. They were proudly carried at dances during the early reservation years and used for the recounting of war exploits. (For a discussion of horse effigy sticks and a similar photograph of Last Horse, posed standing, in the same studio setting, see: West, Ian "Plains Indian Horse Sticks" in American Indian Art Magazine, Volume 3, Number 2, Spring, 1978, pp. 58-67).
Photograph by George E. Spencer, Fort Sheridan (Illinois) bearing his studio imprint on the front of the card. The reverse side is blank. Very good condition, minor abrasion, great tone, tack hole at top.
