Cabinet Card - Portrait of the Long Dog (Sioux) Taken at Fort Yates
Circa 1885
Length 6 1/2 in. Width 4 1/4 in.

Long Dog is wearing a calico shirt, shell earrings, a Christian cross around his neck, and wool leggings with wide beaded strips. Cradled in his left arm is a club fitted with three knife blades. This formidable weapon probably evolved from the classic gunstock war club. Clubs fitted with two or three knife blades were most popular with the Western Sioux (Teton) bands. These clubs are relatively rare in museum collections and seldom seen in historic photographs. Some years prior, Long Dog posed for D.F. Barry with this club in hand and wearing the same distinctive leggings (see Denver Public Library, Western History Collections, photographs B-382, B-383, and B-384, available online).
Photograph by George W. Scott with his studio imprint on the front. Reverse side is blank. George Scott (1854 - 1910) was active at Fort Yates during the 1880's. Fort Yates is located on the banks of the Missouri on the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota. Fair condition with some stains and fading.

Provenance
Skinners Auctioneers, Sale 2265, Lot 440, January 29, 2005. (Note: This photo is labeled incorrectly in pencil "Low Dog". There was a Hunkpapa Sioux chief by this name photographed by D. F. Barry.)
