Identified in period pen on the verso as Cor. John McDonald Troop D 9th Cav USA. Looks like a "B" on his kepi. According to Anthony L. Powell, there was a John McDonald who served in Troop F. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1894. He married in 1894 and had a child. His service ended with a dishonorable discharge for shooting a lance corporal at Fort Robinson. In this cabinet card by McCormick, Arkansas City Kansas he holds his watch. Image is somewhat light, with bottom corners of mount worn.
