Ca. 1950's Hopi Patung Squash Kachine ex-Bonhams
This is a fabulous circa 1950-1960’s Hopi Pueblo Patung, or squash katsina / kachina from the ex-Bonhams 2008 SoMa Estate. The piece is comprised of a cottonwood root wood carved body with the head of a large gourd which has been wonderfully hand painted. The gourd is affixed so that the long top stem is the figure’s nose and on the back of the gourd is a four-prong carved cottonwood carved crown atop. The Patung, also referred to as Patgna / squash or gourd Katsina / Kachina is highly desired by many collectors. Well kept with wonderful poluchrome painting having some slight loss from age.

Provenance: This exact piece was sold by Bonhams in the SoMa Estate Auction February 2008 in San Francisco and a private Paris, France Native American collection. Very similar to several examples such as Hopi Katsina noted as Patgna showing a gourd from the Julian Flak Paris, France collection sold by Brunk in May 2024 for $1,280 (w/ bp) as well as the Manuel Denet Chavarria Patung Katsina from Lyn A. Fox and Patung from Mark Sublette Medicine Man Gallery from the Oscard and Ethel Branson collection.

Measures overall 16-inches tall by 5.75-inches wide by 6-inches D.
