Featured in this lot is this Northern Plains Parfleche sheaths and trade knives circa 1930 to 1950's. There are two items in this collection. The first is a Parfleche knife sheath that shows a polychromal decoration of Plains Indians geometric patterns with naturally dyed ochre pigments of red, blue, and green with red shroud trade cloth on the border and the trade knife shows a semi curved blade with a wooden handle. The second is a Parfleche sheath frame with brass tacked decoration with trade seed beads along the border including coloration of chalk white, and medium blue beads with red shroud trade cloth attached to the top of the sheaths; the trade knife shows a long blade with a full tang and wooden and tacked hand that is marked with the following: J. Russell & Co - Green River Works. The condition of this pair of Northern Plains sheaths is well preserved with some wear tot eh red shroud trade cloth and shows patina and oxidation to the blades of the trade knives but otherwise shows a well preserved condition. The overall measurements of this pair of knives and sheaths is 22 1/2" x 3 3/8" and 13 3/4" x 3 5/8".
Provenance: From a prominent ex-Bozeman private collection who purchased the majority of his collection from Cowan's, Skinner, Bonhams, Morphy's, Sotheby's, March in Montana, North American Auction and other well revered auction houses.
