Ca. 1900 Southern Laos Tribal Backpack Basket
For your consideration is this beautifully crafted circa 1900-1930's tribal backpack basket from the Southern Laos region. These baskets are traditionally woven with rattan, a type of palm leaf and bamboo and were used for foraging in the forest and carrying vegetables, fruits, maze and more. When calculating the yield of rice, it was not measured in weight but in the number of baskets filled. The baskets were not only used for practical reasons but were also apart of certain tribal ceremonies and celebrations. The basket shows a rattan weave throughout with bamboo elements supporting the structure such as the feet and rims. The straps are finely woven but have been broken from its age and use over the years. The integrity of the basket is good, showing a nice tight weave throughout with the only damaged section being the straps. The basket measures 12 3/8" L x 13 3/4" W x 19 3/16" H. It weighs 1 pound and 14 ounces.
