This is a rare circa 1890-1910 Apache large woven coiled basketry tray from the ex-collection of Sundog and Bruce VanLandingham. The basket shows a large size with five-point flower (similar to a star) with three prominent checkered bands. The basket is woven in willow and devils claw. The coiled woven original condition with very little to no damage for its early age. The basket is likely San Carlos Apache or Yavapai Apache.
Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and acquired by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman which was both part museum and gallery.
