Ca. 1880 Plains Bi-Point Stone Head War Club
This is an original bi-point stone head war club from the Northern Plains dating to circa 1880's from the ex-Harrisburg, Pennsylvania collection. The 19th Century club exhibits an expertly carved bi-point stone head with drilled hole with inserted wooden haft handle in the center secured to the handle wrap of rawhide parfleche along the top and tied with sinew. The wood handle is covered with Indian parfleche rawhide with sinew sewing having a drop or flap of parfleche on the bottom with hole which would have held a wrist throng or drop of feathers. The piece has excellent color and is well preserved. Provenance: Collected by former Harrisburg, Pa., Mayor Stephen Reed from the University of Pennsylvania archives to be displayed in the Museum of the West housed by the Pennsylvania government. Eventually the items were "deaccessioned" or sold at auction in 2013 with this being one of those pieces. Measures overall 25"L and the head is about 6.5"L by 2.5"H by 2.5"D.
