Ca. 1870-1890 Carved Bone High Wheel Bike
For your consideration is a beautiful carved bone high wheel / penny farthing bike sculpture with a metal stand from the mid to late 1800s. This carved bone sculpture shows a high wheel bike also known as a penny-farthing bicycle with working pedals, wheels and handle bars. The seat can be rotated and the handle bars can be turned to move the front wheel. The front pedals move the large wheel while the small wheel follows behind. This sculpture is carved entirely out of bone all the way down to the screws that hold certain components together. Highly detailed with springs, handle bar grips and tread on both the large and small tires. The sculpture shows good condition overall with little wear present and no signs of major damage noted. It measures 7 1/4" L x 3 3/4" W x 6 7/8" H and weighs 101.1 grams. Provenance: From the Tombstone Western Heritage Museum in Tombstone, Arizona. HW48*
