Offered here is a an extremely rare, almost impossible to find, origial glowing patina, never refinished or restored, nearly perfect, bannister back side chair from the early to mid-1700's. I have owned it for a mere 40+ years and am now sadly ready to part with it, as neither of my children would actually appreciate its rarity and importance. <p>
<p>
In the era when this chair was crafted, nothing much was wasted, including stair bannisters that for whatever reason weren't going to be used on a stairway. They split them down the middle lengthwise and used the flat side of the halved bannister to make the back rest for dining chairs. <p>
<p>
This is one that has escaped refinishing or restoring, except possibly for the seat having been replaced. The deep, nearly black, original stain remains on most areas of the chair, with the exception of the back rest and the part of the rungs that would have been used as a foot rest, with that part also being worn nearly flat. <p>
<p>
This chair is on a small scale, and especially because of the wear on the front rungs, I believe it was made for a child's use, perhaps at a children's table in a household with many children. <p>
<p>
The areas of concern are as follows:
At the top center of the backrest, there is an area where I believe there originally was a raised ornamentation, perhaps a half-circle or a crest of some sort, which appears to have been broken off very near the time of its making. <p>
