(1809-1884). Inventor and manufacturer; invented first successful reaping machine (1831) which he continued to perfect and sell utilizing modern marketing techniques. Large collection of 118 documents and letters (1866-1929), mostly business and estate related, involving Cyrus, his brother Leander (1819-1900) and Leander’s son Robert Hall (1847-1920) who became Asst. Supervisor of McCormick Harvesting, plus other business associates, family members and descendants. Included are incorporation documents for McCormick Harvesting Machine Co.; by-laws; mortgage on company land; board meeting minutes; and estate documents referencing Cyrus, Leander and Robert Hall, including Leander’s and Robert Hall’s Last Will & Testaments. Topics reference employee theft; patent suits; business and personal real estate; stock shares; family matters, etc., and a particularly interesting letter suggesting that Robert, Cyrus’ father, actually invented the reaper. TLS by R. Hall McCormick, 2pp, 4to, Chicago, Dec 28, 1910. To his son Robert. In part, “...he said that he considered that it was a good case and that the testimony proved that Robert McCormick was the inventor of the reaper...we are quite right in taking umbrage at their claiming their father to be the inventor of the machine when we are rightfully entitled to any such credit...” Accompanied by brief typed inventory of contents; preserved in a three ring binder. Overall VG/Fine. Fascinating content.
