CURRIER AND IVES OF CHARLES SUMNER. Lithograph print published by Currier & Ives, NY, 1874, entitled "The Death of Charles Sumner, at Washington, D.C. March 11th, 1874. Aged 63 years, 2 months, and 5 days." Below is a quote, "Do Not let the Civil Rights Bill Fail." Approx. 10 x 14", framed under glass. Some margin tears and damp stains apparent, moderate toning. Not removed from frame for examination. Sumner was a Senator from Massachusetts who was attacked on the floor of the Senate on 22 May 1856 after a debate on slavery in Kansas. The attacker was Preston Brooks, a House member, and the nephew of Senator Butler, one of the victims of Sumner's verbal attack during the debate. Sumner recovered, slowly, and continued his radical abolitionist stance through the war, and lobbied for universal suffrage and full rights of citizenship for freed slaves even after the war.
