Allan Cunningham was apprenticed to his brother as a stonemason from the age of eleven, but his passion for literature led him to a career in writing. He came to know Sir Walter Scott and in 1820 submitted to him a verse play, Sir Maraduke Maxwell, published in 1822. Scott pays the poem a compliment in the preface to his Fortunes of Nigel. These tales, highly esteemed in their time, include the best examples of Scottish and English folklore, ballads, verse, superstitions and ghost narratives. Among the sixteen works featured are Ezra Peden, The Selbys of Cumberland and The Haunted Ships.
