<B>Confederate Navy Captain William Newland Maffitt <I>Carte de Visite,</B></I></B></I> blank back. The celebrated Southern raider and blockade-runner is seated in this well-known likeness wearing the clothing of a civilian merchant officer. Very good condition. William N. Maffitt (1819 - 1886) of North Carolina had a long and distinguished career as a naval officer in both the United States and Confederate States navies. He went to sea as a midshipman in 1832, participating in hydrographic surveys up and down the east coast. In the late 1850s, with his own command, Maffitt gave his energies to suppressing the illegal West Indian slave trade.
