Exceptional letter copy book from Dept. of the Interior, General Land Office regarding claims of CPRR land, mineral title issues, conflicts, etc. for the Placer County region from the estate of W & P Nicholls, bankers, at Dutch Flat. Contains letters #1-134, as "copied from Johnson's Scrapbook." (letter 23 3/4). 8.5 x 10"2.5" thick, string bound but covers loose.
The CPRR was getting adverse land claims as its construction across the Sierra continued through completion in 1869. Land claims, such as one from the Kelsey G & S MC in the Kelsey District, El Dorado County were evaluated to find out about prior claimant rights to awarding the railroad sections.
Many claims were disallowed due to lack of fulfillment of regulations. The letters are in the book in reverse order, with #139 up front and #1 in h back. #1 is dated 1864, and discusses the Act of 1862 and the Pacific Railroad (CPRR). Letter #15 instructs California land officials to withdraw all lands 25 miles on either side of the proposed route and make them unavailable for other entry. Letter 31 instructs officials to get the US Marshall to assist in arresting people who have been cutting timber off RR lands illegally (spoilations). Letter 69 discusses irrigation waters concerns. etc.
This is a very important book of letters about the very early beginnings of the CPRR in California.
