COUSTEAU, JACQUES
(1910 - 1997) French ocean explorer, inventor and film maker, he invented the aqualung and developed undersea structures to house divers for long periods of time. Fine content early typed D.S. "J. Y Cousteau" on Calypso Oceanographic Expeditions illustrated letterhead, Paris, [n.d., ca. 1953], headed "NAVIGATION OF THE ANCIENTS: AN OPERATIONAL RESEARCH PLAN". Early in his career, Cousteau describes an underwater excavation his divers have undertaken off Marseilles in which he has recovered 900 large amphorae and 1,400 pieces of export dinnerware, shipped by Marcus Sestius in 240 BC. Cousteau also sets forth his hope to: "…build an exact replica of Marcus Sestius' galley and sail it on the original course…using nothing but the known or supposed original rigging, fittings and instruments…the history of navigation may be deepened…we believe [the voyage] will make a contribution to understanding the past which is ever present…". Slight marginal wear and soiling, overall very good.
