CORNELIS BEELT the Netherlands c. 1660 - before 1702, attributed to Charles II av Englands avfärd från Holland mot London 1660 Oil on canvas, 82 x 111 cm; relined, minor loss of paint, retouches A different version of this event, painted by Cornelis Beelt, was sold at Sotheby’s, London, December 12 1979, no 283, illustr. On September 3rd 1651, Cromwell defeated Charles II at Worcester. Following this defeat Charles II flead through England before escaping to France, where he got economical support by his uncle the prince of Oranian. He retired to the Hague until 1660, when he, thanks to the general Monck, managed to enter London on May 29 1660. The painting depicts king Charles II at the beach of Scheveningen, Hague, the Netherlands on his way to recapture the English throne.
