COORG: Chikka Virarajendra, 1820-1834, lead medal (24.46g), ND (1834), Zeno-278920 (this piece), 49mm, uniface, 6-line Persian text, followed by the Kannada letter vi, pierced twice at the top for suspension, choice VF. Another example of this medal (see our Auction 23, Lot 1766) bears a sticker on its reverse, which reads in English, "Medal - distributed by the King of Coorg among his soldiers in consequence of recent success, 1834 [...] 1851". The king refers to Chikka Virarajendra, who led a brief but bloody uprising against the British in 1834 and was subsequently deposed, his kingdom annexed. One source translates the inscription briefly as "This humble person has sent this (other) person for war without provisions except the blessings, so his sponsorship is a must for you." If this translation is to be believed, it is likely that this medal was issued by Chikka Virarajendra to allow his soldiers to ask for provisions in his name.
