COOPER ( George ). Letters on the Irish nation : written during a visit to that kingdom, in the autumn of the year 1799. The second edition. Printed by J. Davis, for J. White, 1801Pages xl, 354, without the advert leaf at end and with a small, faint stamp on the title-page, otherwise a very good, pleasantly bound copy, 8vo, contemporary polished calf, gilt, fully gilt spine : with the armorial bookplate of Henry Hunfrey and, at head of contents leaf, the signature "Daniel O'Connell / Dublin". McVeagh 44. The Liberator's copy of a critical and valuable series of observations by an English lawyer written just before the Union. It is here greatly enlarged on the 201-pages of the original edition of 1800 and is also in a larger format. The new 3-page preface is dated October 18, 1800. In it Cooper claims that there is nothing in the recently passed Act of Union "that at all weakens the reasonings contained in the following pages". Cooper was accompanied on his travels in Ireland by James Clarke, a fellow barrister. Both editions are rare and have not previously come our way.ENGLISH PRE 1801; IRELAND; TRAVEL; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ;
