CONWAY ( Wm. Martin ), Baron Conway of Allington, FRGS. Climbing and Exploration in the Karakoram-Himalayas. T. Fisher Unwin, 1894With a folding map and 300 full-page and other illustrations by A. D. McCormick, pages xxviii, 709, (1) and advert leaf, roy 8vo, original pictorial cloth, top edges gilt : the endpapers neatly renewed and blank corner of half-title neatly cut away : a very good copy. Conway (1856–1937), art historian and mountaineer. In 1892 he led a large-scale mountaineering expedition to the Karakoram Himalayas with the financial support of scientific societies and his father-in-law, Manton Marble. Marble was not sure about Conway's motives : ‘Tis not quite relevant to your art-career to be climbing mountains, but I perceive that Alpine, Caucasian, or Himalayan supereminence may be the cornerstone of artistic eminence’ (Evans, 134). Conway's large party surveyed the Baltoro glacier and the region around K2, and ascended Pioneer Peak on Baltoro Kangri, which at 6890 metres may have constituted an altitude record at the time (ODNB). A supplementary volume, rarely found, of scientific reports, etc., was later published.ALSO WITH THIS LOT: NOTTAGE ( Charles G. ), FRGS. In search of a climate.
