<hr align=left size=5 width=33% color=#778899>Collection of five generals criticized for their conduct in the field. Four are attractively matted beside their images, contained under glass and framed. These include Major General <b><font size=-1>Alfred Pleasonton</font></b> (1824-1897), criticized for being overly cautious and unable to inspire his forces. Signed 3½"x2" card, “<i>A. Pleasonton</i>.” Also Major General <b><font size=-1>Franz Sigel</font></b> (1824-1902), who rallied immigrant Germans to the Union, lost to Jackson in the ‘62 Valley Campaign and soundly beaten at New Market. Mounted signature, 3¾"x2¼", penned “<i>F. Sigel...April 9th 1889</i>.” Some soiling and dampstains. Major General <b><font size=-1>John Pope</font></b> (1822-1892), outmaneuvered by Lee and Jackson at Second Bull Run. Mounted signature with rank, 3¼"x2¼". Some soiling and dampstains. Plus Major General <b><font size=-1>Fitz John Porter</font></b> (1822-1901), accused by Pope of “disobedience and disloyalty” and relieved. His conviction was overturned years later. ALS, 1p, 12mo, New York, Apr 10, 1889. On Fire Department Headquarters letterhead, beginning with quote, “<i>'I give thee all I can no more, through poor the offering be.'</i>” He continues, “<i>I expected to send you a number of autographs...but owing to everything being packed up for a change of quarters, I cannot find them.</i>..” Boldly penned and signed as Fire Commissioner. Extensive dampstaining, though entirely legible. Fair condition. Lastly, hot-tempered Major General <b><font size=-1>William S. Rosecrans</font></b> (1819-1898), Chief of the Army of the Cumberland, defeated at Chickamauga at the cost of his command. Mounted signature, “<i>W.S. Rosecrans / Register of Treas</i>,” 2¾"x1", double matted, unframed. Overall in good condition with noted exceptions.
