CONTARINI ( Gasparo ). De RepublicaVenetorum libri quinque. Item synopsis reip: Venetae, et alii de eadem discursus politici. Editio secunda auctior. Lugd. Batavorum, ex officina Elzeviriana, 1628With engraved title-page and pages 411, (1), 24mo, contemporary vellum, yap edges : a nice copy with the Donoughmore book label Willems 293. First published Paris, 1543, as De magistratibus et republica Venetorum. There was another 1628 Leyden edition with a different pagination. Contarini"s immensely influential "De magistratibus et republica Venetorum", first published posthumously in 1543, was soon translated into French, Italian, and English, and often reprinted during the 17C. It refashioned Venice as the ideal peace-loving republic, whose balanced political structures led to social peace and artistic excellence. It is believed that Shakespeare drew a good part of his knowledge of Venice, used in The Merchant of Venice, from this work.ALSO WITH THIS LOT: NETHERLANDS. Respublica Hollandiae, et urbes.
