One of the first female photojournalists, Consuelo Kanaga joined the influential "Group f/64," a group of California photographers who organized in 1932 in reaction to Pictorialism. Just prior, Kanaga shot a series of portraits of the southern California art patron Alice Rohrer, which were gifted to the sitter. Rohrer was a significant supporter of Edward Weston, and presented him with $500 in 1932 to guarantee the completion of his book, THE ART OF EDWARD WESTON, which he, in turn, dedicated to her. Weston later photographed Rohrer, but his portraits lack the drama and fresh beauty that Kanaga achieved in the present photograph.
