Competing theories proliferate about Brancusi’s photographs. The artist may have produced them to document his sculptures, or to create independent artistic statements. We do know that Brancusi was deeply conscious of the various materials and textures he chose for his sculpture. With photography he was able to manipulate the lighting surrounding his sculpture in order to heighten these contrasts. Here he focuses on an individual object and its sculpted pedestal. This type of photograph counters those he made that place a greater emphasis on his studio. The three Brancusi photographs being sold in this sale (Lots 147 and 268) are from the archives of the art journal Cahiers d’Arts.
