(CONFEDRATE OFFICER WHO LOST LEG AT APPOMATTOX)
War-date printed circular of Confederate General Orders No. 43, 1p. 8vo., Richmond, Apr. 15, 1863 concerning, in part: "…Adjt. John N. C. Stockton, of the 1st Virginia Infantry…[is charged with]…conduct prejudicial to good order and military discipline…". Stockton was sentenced to be cashiered and dismissed from the service as: "…his conduct is deemed highly discreditable; but the department indulges the hope that this exercise of clemency towards him will exert a beneficial influence over his future course…". Stockton served throughout the war, but lost his leg as a result of a wound received just before Lee surrendered at Appomattox. Minor spotting, else very good.
