<B>CONFEDERATE OFFICER'S FIELD AND STAFF SWORD WITH LEATHER SCABBARD BY JAMES CONNING, MOBILE, ALABAMA</B></I>. This field & staff officer's sword was provided to Conning by Jacob Fraser of Macon, MS, with “CS” cast in the guard. The leather scabbard is backstitched, retaining approximately 90% of original black finish. The mounts are typical gilt brass style of those produced by Conning being of plain design with applied attachment for the mounting ring.The unstopped fullered blade is 33" from tip to guard; overall the sword is 38" in length.<BR><BR>James Conning produced a wide variety of edged weapons with the assistance of Jacob Fraser in Mobile, Alabama. Since Mobile did not fall until the latter part of the Civil War, there are a number of examples of these products; few in as fine a condition as this example, which retains 90% original gilt.
