Detailed reportage includes Jackson’s victory at Front Royal, another account of the destruction of the steamer <i>Virginia</i>; proclamation issued by “<i>Picayune Butler</i>” in New Orleans; the raids of Colonel Hunt Morgan; rumors of French and British recognition of the Confederacy; the efforts of Louis Napoleon to end American hostilities; the British and Russian views; the fighting during McClellan’s Peninsular Campaign; details of Confederate victories at Secessionville; the death of Turner Ashby at Harrisonburg; account of the exploits of JEB Stuart and his promotion to major general; the condition of “<i>Our Suffering Army</i>” as a number of regiments march through Richmond and an appeal for citizens to come to their aid; financing the war with a “<i>Cotton Loan</i>” and other schemes; fighting in the “<i>Highlands</i>” of western Virginia; shortage of men and enforcement of the Conscription Law; prayers for peace and Jackson’s remark that he hoped people would not forget that “<i>God giveth the victory</i>...”.
