<B>CONFEDERATE NAVAL COMMANDER MATTHEW FONTAINE MAURY AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED, 1862.</B></I> Maury was America's foremost oceanographer in the mid-19th century. Serving as a commander in the US Navy at the start of the Civil War, he resigned his commission and was commissioned into the Confederate States Navy as Chief of Harbor Defenses. He was instrumental in acquiring ships for the Confederacy and was a noted figure in the Confederate Navy.<BR><BR>This one page letter from Richmond, dated August 28, 1862, the text of which is not completely legible, is clearly signed "<I>M. F. Maury</B></I>". There is a notation that the letter is to be forwarded to Confederate Secretary of the Treasury Charles Memminger and there is further content in another hand on the inside of the 5" x 7.5" lined paper.<BR><B><BR>Condition:</B></I> The ink on front has blurred, fold marks, otherwise the paper is in very good condition.<BR><BR><b>Shipping:</b> Flat Material, Small (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.heritageauctions.com/common/shipping.php">view shipping information</a>)
