Latimer is not subject to Military duty to the Confederate States by reason of his being the owner of five hundred head of cattle...is a good loyal citizen</i>...[and] <i>is discharged from the custody of Col. James Bourland and all others claiming him for confederate service</i>...” Boldly penned and signed. Chipping at right edge with little paper loss; light show-through; o/w VG. <b>James Bourland</b> (1801-1879), the defendant in this case, had traded in slaves and livestock in TN and KY before moving to TX in 1837. He served as provost marshal for northern Texas region, organized and led the “Border Regiment.”</span></p>
