CONFEDERATE GOVERNMENT SETS FORTH ITS PEACE TERMS
Great Confederate imprint, House Resolution No. 25, Richmond, Jan. 13, 1863, 7pp. 8vo., (P&W #529). A printed CSA House of Representatives resolution in which the Southern government, as yet unbeaten in any major conflict, sets forth the terms of any peace which the Union might seek to make. In part: "...There is no plan onstructing what was formerly known as the Federal Union...Wrongs too grievous and multiplied have been committed...people of the Northern States....submitted patiently to the iron rule of the basest and most degrading despotism...the Confederate States of America are not at all responsible for the existing war...a formal and unconditional recognition of their independence...formation of a...Commercial Treaty with all the States...except New England...whose love of gold and brutifying fanaticism, this disgraceful war has mainly originated...willing to enter into a League, offensive and defensive [with states denouncing New England]...". Much more fascinating reading in this "offer", which would become moot the following July following the epic clash of arms at Gettysburg. Very good.

Estimate: $200 - 300.
