(CONFEDERATE GENERALS): A rare grouping of war-date endorsements on the verso of a letter by one James L. Coker, Major 6th Reg. S.C.V. Infantry, [n.p.], Feb. 27, 1865 in which Coker requests retirement owing to his disability and fearing that if his command is moved, he would be unable to follow. On the verso appear signed endorsements by JOHN BRATTON (1831-1898), Confederate brigadier general who led his regiment throughout the war, including Seven Pines, Fredericksburg, the Wilderness and Appomattox, who approves the request, with a second approving endorsement by Major General CHARLES W. FIELD (1828-1892), who fought at Gaines Mill, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania and around Petersburg. Four letters in Bratton's signature are brushed, else very good. $600-800
