CONFEDERATE CROSS OF HONOR APPLICATION: A fine grouping of documents relating to the son of A.H. Latern's attempts to have his father posthumously awarded the Confederate Cross of Honor. During the Civil War the Confederacy, arguing that all of its soldiers were heroes, did not issue any formal medals or awards. After the war the Daughters of the Confederacy, wishing to find a way to honor their ancestors, created the Confederate Cross of Honor award. In addition to the actual application, filed in August 21, 1912, there are two A.L.S.'s written to the deceased soldier's son outlining the details of his service. The letter written by N.P. Tatim states that: "... Your father belonged [to] the Norfolk County Rifle Patriots Organized in 1860 and held the rank as [sic] corporal. He was captured on the 27th April 1864 and not exchanged. That was the reason he had no discharge papers from Lee's surrender ...In 1862 it joined ...the 41st. Va. ...sent to Richmond and assigned to Mahones Brigade..." It is unusual to find applications for this award along with their supporting documents. Moderate fold wear and creasing, otherwise very good condition. $75-100
