(CONFEDERATE COLONEL'S OATH OF ALLEGIANCE)
"An interesting A.L.S. ""Wm. Voorhies"" adding rank as late colonel of the 48th Tennessee, 3pp. 4to., Johnson's Island Prison, [n. d.], to President Johnson requesting a pardon. Voorhies was confined on Dec. 17, 1864 and must have been captured at the battle of Nashville. He gives a brief outline of his Confederate service adding that he will be a good citizen if released under Johnson's May, 1865 proclamation. Apparently the pardon was granted as Voorhies adds a fifteen line sworn oath to the United States government at the end of the document. Endorsed by Bvt. Maj. Gen. CHARLES W. HILL (1812-1881) as commandant of the Johnson Island Prison, July 5, 1865. Very good." 2409 An interesting A.L.S. ""Wm.
