(CONFEDEARTES RECRUIT ANDERSONVILLE PRISONERS)
A pair of rare war-date documents concerning the Confederate recruitment of Federal prisoners from Andersonville and other rebel prisons. First, is a "Copy" A.L.S. from Brig. Gen. Marcus Wright 1p. 4to., Macon, Ga., Oct. 21, 1864 reading, in full: "Capt. J. M. McMurray will proceed to Andersonville, Millen and such other points where Federal prisoners are confined for the purpose of enlisting prisoners under orders of the Secretary of War. Transportation will be furnished by direction of Gen'l. Hood.". Along with a partly-printed D. S. "James M. McMurray" adding rank on an official Confederate States official form, 1p. small 4to., [Atlanta], Dec. 18, 1864, paying McMurray the transportation allowance due him for Oct. 21 to Dec. 18, 1864. These documents show the desperate measures to which the Confederate government was willing to go in order to bolster their dwindling supply of manpower. Scant evidence shows that actually a small number of prisoners did enlist in the army. Overall very good.
