CONCENTRATION CAMP PHOTOGRAPHS
Gruesome souvenir recovered at the German concentration camp at Nordhausen, a camp used to eliminate prisoners too weakened or sick to continue working at the V1 and V2 underground construction tunnels. Present is a 20" long piece of 1/2" thick braided steel cable which has been stripped of its black rubber insulation except for a 6" section which served as a grip. A leather thong has been spliced into the cable to serve as a carrying strap. The opposite end of the cable has been whipped with thin metal wire which in turn was dipped in lead, this serving to keep the end of the cable from fraying and to add weight to this brutal weapon. A hastily-penned note dated Feb. 9, 1991 accompanies the weapon, signed by the nephew of an American soldier who recovered it: "The whip was taken from Norhauser [sic] prison and concentration camp by uncle...". The club and note were consigned with five small photos of the dead at Nordhausen, one showing two American medics on the scene, with other Americans visible in the other images as well.
