John Chapman (:Chapman's Quarterly series, nos 3 and 4), 1853FIRST EDITION THUS, pp xxxvi, 480 : xvi, 561, (1) & advert leaf, with half-titles, 2 vols, 8vo, original cloth, uncut : slight wear at headbands, but bindings sound and strong, though the boards are just lightly discoloured, and otherwise in very good to nice original stated.The first edition in English. Comte was pleased with the manner in which his work had been abridged and placed this translation amongst the books to be read by his disciples in place of his own original version. Following an introduction on the nature of phrenology and its faculties, the authors proceed to cover a wide range of psychological case studies, providing various recommendations under such headings as 'On Matrimonial Selection', 'Effeminate Young Men', 'The Insanity of Shoping', 'Is Your Child an Idiot?', etc. S. E. O'Dell was one of the leading consulting phrenologists of the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. He founded the London Phrenological Institution in 1879 and at the height of his career ran two large establishments in London, dealing with in excess of 30,000 clients annually. An Irishman by birth, his father lived at Montpelier House, Limerick and his mother was a Miss Bernard from Carlow. (3) MAYHEW ( Anthony L. ).
