1782-Published, Copperplate Engraving, COMMODORE ESEK HOPKINS, First Commander of the Continental Navy, Choice Near Mint.
An original and rare handsome copperplate engraving of the important Revolutionary War American naval hero COMMODORE ESEK HOPKINS, first Commander of the Continental Navy. This print was removed from Murray's "History of the War in America" published in 1782. Overall size 5" x 8" on handmade period paper, blank reverse. Esek Hopkins (1718-1802) of Rhode Island was a well known Privateer of the French and Indian War. He was appointed Commodore and first Commander of the fledgling Continental Navy during the American Revolution. This portrait was prepared for one of the first British narratives about the American Revolution, published before the end of the war. A great print impression for display.
