COLUMBUS SPIRAL BLOCK TOWER BY BLISS WITH ORIGINAL BOX.
An amazing paper on wood toy with this being the only known example in remarkable condition with its original box. At the time period this must have been quite a complicated toy for a young child to assemble, obviously parental help would have been needed. It stands an amazing 5 foot plus high to the top of Columbus's flag (not original to toy). When a marble or wooden ball is dropped down through the spring type tubing it cascades about, finally reaching the lower level and hitting one of the comical see-saw figures. It is hard to believe that over the years pieces of this toy did not become separated or lost! About the various levels are lithographed blocks with lettering on one side and figures on the other. The various wooden platforms also have a bevy of lithographed paper with lettering. A somewhat fragile and delicate toy and yet visually and ascetically quite pleasing to the eye. One can imagine that this toy, due to its complexity and frailty, was not a commercial success thus it is quite evident why this toy is so obscure/rare and highly sought after by collectors. Adding to the allure of this toy is the fact that the Olins purchased it from renowned toy collector and ATCA member Herb Siegel. To put it in simple terms, this is a "once in a blue moon" opportunity. SIZE: 5 feet. PROVENANCE: The Diane and late Steve Olin collection. CONDITION: Overall exceptional original condition with paper largely intact. Most noteworthy is some distress to one flag on upper level and Columbus lacking tiny piece of wood on hand to keep flag in place. Coloring is vibrant and strong and this toy appears to have had very little use and/or exposure to the sunlight. 1-13274
