COLT, SAMUEL
(1814 - 1862) American inventor and gun manufacturer, inventor of the revolver who founded the Patent Arms Manufacturing Co. and made a fortune during the Mexican War. Scarce fine content A.L.S. 3pp. 4to., Hartford, Apr. 12, 1859 to his agent, T. E. Tolifarro concerning a potential arms contract with the War Department. He writes to his agent in part: ""...I telegraphed to this morning that Col. Drinkard would introduce you to a junior officer of the Quartermaster Department who would aid you in making out the details of your contracts. you will of course know who is to aid him to introduce to you by the description I gave you of an officer who I thought would aid you in the details of your business. I allude to the tall officer with the cast in his eye...I cannot recall his name to my mind at this instant. You now better show him the letters from me to Maj. Harris and to his honor, the Secretary...Invite him to your room and to dine with you. I think you can say to him that you will pay him a compliment if he will aid you in the details of your contracts with the departments. I have written to Maj. Sibley of Detroit who is an old Californian and now a great deal of experience in government business. He is a brother of Governor Sibley of Nebraska and of Maj. Sibley of the Quartermaster's department. He is an old personal friend and would be an extremely valuable man for us to be associated with for very many reasons....Should Maj. Sibley decline and if he is not able to go to Washington even to aid you in arranging your contract then I see no other way for you to trust the resources you may find through your introductions by Col. Drinkard. I have however given you a note of introduction to General Klingman...The general will like to talk with you about [?] the Arab Expedition, the present and later governments there etc. etc. and he will give you any information he can in a friendly way. He will introduce you to anyone you want to know in Washington...Let me hear form you from time to time as business progresses and if you get a telegraph from Maj. Sibley that he will soon be with you then you had better wait for him before you conclude your contract..."". Some toning to extreme edges and center vertical folds, otherwise very good condition.
