(COLONEL ELMER ELLSWORTH FLAG STAFF RELICS)
"A relic related to the famous mortal wounding of Colonel Elmer Ellsworth by a rebel hotel keeper at Alexandria, Virginia. In late May, 1861. Ellsworth was with his close personal friend Abraham Lincoln at the White House. A Confederate flag could be seen defiantly flying across the river in Alexandria, and Ellsworth then vowed to remove the flag. Arriving at the Marshall House Ellsworth kept his word and removed the flag only to be killed by the hotel's owner. We offer here a small piece of wood, approx. 1/2"" x 1/4"" apparently from an old museum collection, affixed to a card with silk which reads in period ink: ""A piece of the flag staff which held the flag, in capturing which, Col. Ellsworth lost his life in the late rebellion"" Overall very good." 2475 A relic related to the famous mortal wounding of Colonel Elmer Ellsworth by a rebel hotel keeper at Alexandria, Virginia.
