COLOMBIA, Cartagena, gold cob 2 escudos, 1634, assayer E below mintmark C to right, upright denomination II to left, crosses inside and outside tressure around the cross, possibly unique, NGC MS 62, ex-Trastámara. Restrepo-unl (M52.16 for type); S-C7; Cal-1766; KM-4.6; Fr-2a. 6.47 grams. Extremely choice example with very bold full date and cross and shield, +II+ (upright) to left and +C-E+ to right, all on a large flan with much legend, marks in centers, rich gold color and muted luster. While two other examples appear in the NGC census, we suspect they are both of different varieties, as two other varieties are known for this date: C-E to left, and C-E to right with ringlets outside the tressure. Adding to its already prominent pedigree, this coin will be featured in the introduction of Daniel Sedwick's upcoming book Arce's Doubloons. Pedigreed to the Trastámara Collection (Aureo & Calicó auction of May 2017, lot 81).
