COLOMBIA, Cartagena, gold cob 2 escudos, 1631, assayer E above mintmark C to right, modified 1E obverse, dots inside, crosses outside tressure around cross, rare, NGC AU details / edge filing, ex-Lasser, Restrepo Plate. Restrepo-M52.16; S-C7; Cal-1763; KM-4.6; Fr-2a. 6.48 grams. Small flan yet with full cross and bottom half of all four digits of date, full shield with bold denomination •II• (reading vertically) punched over upright I to left (modified 1E die) and •E-C• to right, light yellow color. Curiously, this 1631 obverse (known in combination with two different reverse dies) is the only one in the entire Cartagena gold production of 1626-35 to show the assayer ABOVE the mintmark. Pedigreed to the Joseph Lasser Collection (Ponterio auction of January 2005, lot 813), also Plate Coin M52-16 on page 86 of Restrepo's Coins of Colombia (2012).
