A W.H. Jackson photograph showing 14th Street and homes. Photo #272, by famed western photographer W.H. Jackson, part of his Rocky Mountain Scenery series. It measures 4.5 x 7." William Henry Jackson (1843-1942) took about 80,000 photographs in a career that began in 1869 with a commission from the Union Pacific Railroad to take pictures of points of interest for their advertising campaigns, and ended about 1895 after taking a world photography tour. He photographed the Chicago Columbian Exposition in 1893. In 1870 he was invited by Ferdinand Hayden, a U.S. geologist who was going west to complete a geological survey of the Yellowstone area of Wyoming, to photograph the expedition. Jackson continued to accompany Hayden on his annual western geological surveys until the trips ended in 1878. The following year Jackson opened a studio in Denver and photographed famous landmarks throughout the west, unmarked paths, mines, geological formations, flora, fauna and whatever else struck his fancy. He was one of the most prolific photographers of the 19th century. Upon retiring from being a photographer he helped develop the color post card and branched into publishing, writing, lecturing, sketching and painting.
